What is Root Canal?

The root canal is the hollow channel within a tooth containing soft tissue, or pulp, made up of blood vessels and nerve tissue, which can become infected through decay or injury.

This doesn’t always mean the tooth must be removed. An endodontic treatment, also known as a “root canal”, is a safe and effective way of saving the severely injured, cracked, or decayed tooth. If it is not treated promptly, pain or a tooth abscess (infection) results.

Root canal treatment is completed in one or two office visits, depending on the presence of infection and the required treatment plan. After restoration, with good oral hygiene, the restored tooth has the potential to last a lifetime.

Root canal treatment is used to save teeth which would otherwise need to be removed. This medical procedure is done to restore such a tooth. We follow two / three visits to complete the treatment.

The first appointment will take atleast 20 minutes time in which opening is made through the crown of the tooth into the pulp chamber and pulp is removed, cleaned and shaped to a form that can be filled.

In the second appointment dressing has been carried out and it will take 15 minutes time

The third appointment will take 1 hour in which filling is done with protapers G.P. points. Later crown is given to strengthen the teeth

Symptoms

  • Tooth or gum pain, prolonged sensitivity to heat or cold.
  • A tooth that is tender when it is touched.
  • A tooth abscess.
  • Pus drainage in your mouth.
  • Swelling or tenderness in the lymph nodes under your jaw.

Root Canal Treatment

The treatment involves the removal of the diseased pulp along with the tooth’s nerve. The pulp chamber and root canal(s) of your tooth are then cleaned, medicated and sealed, and your tooth repaired with a crown which will protect the tooth from fracture and make it easier to use and clean.

Prevention of Endodontic Problems

Prevention is the best way to avoid endodontic problems. Here are some tips to help maintain good oral health and prevent endodontic problems:

Brush and Floss Regularly: Brushing and flossing your teeth twice a day can help prevent dental caries and other endodontic problems.

Avoid Hard or Sticky Foods: Chewing on hard or sticky foods can cause fractures or damage to your teeth.

Wear a Mouthguard: If you participate in sports or other high-impact activities, wearing a mouthguard can help protect your teeth from trauma.

Visit the Dentist Regularly: Regular dental checkups and cleanings can help identify endodontic problems early and prevent them from becoming more severe.
